A ministry that destigmatizes mental health.

The National Institute of Mental Health defines childhood trauma as an event by a child that is emotionally painful or distressful, which often results in lasting negative mental and physical effects. This trauma occurs when a child is continuously exposed to these stressors, often known as interpersonal trauma; for example abuse, neglect and violence. Children can also experience traumatic events such as accidents, natural disasters, war, civil unrest or the sudden loss of a parent or caregiver.

According to the Alabama Department of Mental Health, one study showed half of the children in the U.S. are exposed to at least one traumatic family or social experience. This study also showed that these traumatic experiences can seriously impact a child's health into adulthood...even 50 years after the traumatic event.

Effects of Trauma

  • Smoking

  • Alcoholism

  • Drug use

  • Over eating

  • Chronic health conditions

  • Abusive nature (generational)

  • Early death

  • Suicide

The presence of positive protective factors such as Hu'Mend Network can provide safe and nurturing relationships. These relationships can potentially lessen the effects of trauma and youth can develop resiliency and positive self awareness.
